THE 12 AUSSIE VENUE & DESIGNER FINALISTS FOR THE 2015 INTERNATIONAL RESTAURANT & BAR DESIGN AWARDS
Proving once again that Aussies punch well above their weight in the talent stakes, we look at 12 local designers, architects and venues in the running for the 2015 International Restaurant & Bar Design Awards and why you should make them your next night out.
Broadbeach Islands, Broadbeach, QLD
The more is more ethos of the Gold Coast is still in the DNA at Vivo Cucina but only when it comes to its 2 metre long wood-fired pizza oven. The rest is almost restrained by GC standards, thank to Luchetti Krelle’s abundant use of natural materials (the closest thing to glitz is the brass work on the light fittings) as well as a clever nod to colours of the Amalfi Coast.
BATES SMART for
33 Cross Street, Double Bay, NSW
The plush and popular Intercontinental Double Bay has no trouble finding a crowd to please any day of the week but thanks to the marble and leather-glad grandeur of Stillery Gin they’ve got spirit lovers lining up to experience Sydney’s “super yacht of bars.”
ALEXANDER & CO for
Station Road, Adelaide, SA
In typical casino style, Adelaide’s Skycity has put it all on red with their newly renovated high-profile grill. Thankfully Head Chef Sean Connolly’s creations have been creating more on street buzz than a progressive five line jackpot. But no matter how delicious the dishes, all restaurateurs know that the insides count just as much and Alexander & Co’s modern take on the 1920s New York brasserie might hold all the cards to putting this swish South Australian eatery on the international radar.
STUDIO-GRAM for
7 Ebenezer Place, Adelaide, SA
You couldn’t get further from a traditional Afghan marketplace than Adelaide’s East End but that’s exactly what makes Parwana Kutchi Deli so brilliant. The second chapter for the owners of Parwana, the popular Torrensville restaurant owned by Zelmai and Farida Ayubi, Kutchi Deli celebrates the colour and vibrancy of their homeland with an almost unrelentingly merry collection of trinkets, tiles and teapots. Guaranteed to lift your spirits before you’ve even tasted a thing.
LUCHETTI KRELLE for
Broadbeach Islands, Broadbeach, QLD
+61 2 7 5592 8100
Kiyomi is another brilliant entry for Luchetti Krelle and is just as distinctive as its fellow Jupiter’s Casino counterpart, Vivo Cucina. But while Kiyomi is a star in the casino’s $345 million redevelopment, Luchetti Krelle opted for an understated energy. Head Chef Chase Kijoma has even described it as ‘delicate’, which on the flashy Gold Coast is an achievement in itself.
2D STUDIO for
15 Bayswater Road, Potts Point, Sydney, NSW
Middle Eastern street food never looked so well presented, thanks to 2D Studio’s juxtaposition of industrial neon and traditional ornate mosaics. Like it’s North African and Moroccan inspirations, this park bakery, part restaurant, part bar offers a little bit of everything but never strays from being refined and polished.
TRAVIS WALTON ARCHITECTURE for
Cato Street, Prahran, VIC
Clean (eating) by trade AND by design, award winning architect Travis Walton brought a little piece of New York’s Soho cold-pressed juice culture to Melbourne. The results fit somewhere between a modern apothecary, elixir bar and gallery space.
125 Fitzroy Street, St Kilda, VIC
Grant Amon and his team have breathed new life into a St Kilda favourite, with honeycomb inspired roof fittings and amber lighting that adds a cosy atmosphere and will stand the test of time.
AKIN CREATIVE for
169 Dolphin Street, Coogee, Sydney, NSW
With restaurant mega-mogul Justin Hemmes at the helm, Coogee Pavilion was always destined to set tongues wagging but with Akin Creative’s Kelvin Ho at the design helm it’s gone on to set the bar (pun intended) for Sydney’s entire beach pub scene. Creative consultant, author (Happy and Rethink: The Way You Live) and former Elle Decor editor Amanda Talbot also had a hand in the process and you can see her influence in all the curious and unconventional touches.
TOMMARKHENRY for
39-53 Campbell Parade, Hall Street, Sydney, NSW
It seems that TomMarkHenry are the dream team when it comes to reinvigorating classic Sydney haunts (they’re behind the refurbishments at The Village and Brooklyn Social) and their work with Bondi’s Best new Hall Street venue is no exception. Staying true to the restaurants dine-in or out model, we love the split-use floor plan separating the two with a textured mosaic wall.

ACME & CO for
85 Dunning Avenue, Rosebery, NSW
Literally the spirit of Sydney, Archie Rose Distilling Co is a veritable temple to the 30-something who fancies a whiskey as old as his drivers licence (and then some). Anything less than the brushed steel and glistening copper constructions by Acme & Co just wouldn’t work. Whether you’re fan of the hard stuff or not, it’s well worth a visit to simply gaze upon their mastery.
LUCHETTI KRELLE for
60 Bayswater Road, Rushcutters Bay, Sydney, NSW
Far enough from the rabble of Kings Cross to discourage the riff-raff but just close enough to inherit some of its playful energy, it seems the team from ACME (Mitch Orr of Duke Bistro and Andy Emerson, Cam Fairnbairn and Ed Loveday from The Passage), know all about hitting the sweet spot of being something for everyone. Inside you’ll find the right blend of relaxed counter seating and small intimate tables, as well as a low-lit private dining room and a downstairs island bar for pre-dinner wines or post-feast revellers.
The finalists in the 2015 International Restaurant and Bar Design Awards have been selected from 3,800 entires across the UK and 70 other countries. The 2015 awards ceremony will be held in London October 1st 2015.
