Date night. It seems like it’s this campaign that couples promise to embark on only when there’s least amount of time to do it. “Every month!” they say, as though the madness of life will magically part ways like the Dead Sea to make room for romance, only to realise three months down the track that a dinner and drinks has swiftly transformed into couch and movie time.
Or is that just us?
Either way, the Merivale group is determined to bring back the vintage concept the classic Date Night, inviting lovers and friends to mid-week mingles at their most popular restaurants as part of the 2015 March into Merivale festival. They’ve even got the love notes half written out for you. Men-folk take note, this could be the easiest brownie points splurge in the city.
Sushi E is one of the restaurant groups longest standing palette pleasers and for good reason. They’ve got the superluxe sushi bar strategy down perfectly, thanks in no small part to the interiors. A solid marble bar top makes for one seriously decadent spot to devour a Beef Tataki.
Head chef Nobuyuki Ura’s menu perfectly matches the aesthetics, with expertly carved tuna sashimi that resembles something closer to high-art than a simple hunger buster (you’ll love the lime and white soy dressing). It seems a shame to disturb the presentation, it’s half of what you’re paying for.
But when boils down to it, if you’re trying to impress your lover isn’t it really all about making the best impression possible? Sushi E knows this and doesn’t disappoint.
Highly recommended
The Nasu Dengaku, or roasted eggplant covered in red bean miso, fried leek and lotus root. Even if you’re a dedicated meat-for-mains traditionalist, this is one plate that will have you wondering if the vegetarians had it right all along. The eggplant cubes are buttery soft and paired with the sauce it’s so tasty you’ll be chopstick fighting with your partner for her final few bites.
