Because we travel with more equipment than a David Attenborough documentary team (or at least it feels like it), we normally drive a truck. Which is great for the trunk space but means putting up with a less than impressive turning circle and an ever-present hum of a diesel engine marring the serenity of the open road. Whenever we hear this sound it means only one thing, fuel costs.
For this journey we were bestowed with a sporty Mazda2 sedan, which not only looks the part but felt like the gift that kept on giving every single time it thoughtfully let us know when speed cameras were nearby. How does it know? We don’t know the sorcery but it’s clearly part of the Mazda magic (it’s actually called MZD Connect and it made us feel loved).
Weaving between lanes (well within the speed limit, thank you again MZD Connect) is a whole other experience when the car isn’t carrying a studio worth of equipment. In the Mazda2 hills feel like a breeze, green lights are fun again and the engine is confidently silent. Not kidding, mistakenly locking the car and walking away while it’s still on can actually happen.
Most importantly it only cost $23 in fuel to drive to the mountains and we all know a happy hip-pocket is a happy traveller.
The nice little surprise is that, no joke, we fit our entire camera equipment case plus an overnight bag into the boot. So essentially, it packs the storage of a struck with the good looks of a sports car. Like we said… Sorcery.
